Earlier this month, All My Children star Cameron Mathison stunned the daytime community with a social media post that revealed that doctors had found a tumor on his kidney. Even more surprising was the news that Mathison would be undergoing surgery just a few days later.
It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that the daytime community rallied around the actor. Now, Mathison is back with an update -- and kind words for all of those who shared messages of support with him.
"Feeling loved and supported by my family and friends, including each and everyone of you," Mathison wrote in a caption to a post-surgery photo he shared on Instagram. "I've been very overwhelmed and so grateful for all of the supportive comments and prayers. The surgery went very well. The tumor is gone and I even got to keep 80% of my kidney."
Mathison added that he is "optimistic" about his prognosis.
On Tuesday, the 50-year-old Mathison shared a photo of himself back in the comfort of his home, surrounded by cards and flowers.
"Unbelievably grateful to be back home after a successful partial nephrectomy surgery," Mathison wrote. "It was an eventful 4 days in the hospital, and doing well at home now."
When cancer is confined to the kidney, surgery is usually the only treatment needed. When possible, a partial nephrectomy is preferred to a total removal of a kidney because it preserves kidney function.
Since All My Children ended in 2011, Mathison has gone on to non-acting jobs on Hallmark's Home and Family, Good Morning America, and Entertainment Tonight. He has also appeared in several of Hallmark's Murder She Baked movies alongside Days of our Lives' Alison Sweeney.
